Italy Becomes Fourth Largest Consumer of Champagne as Italians’ Love Affair with French Bubbles Grows

With more than 10 million bottles imported in 2007, Italy has become the fourth largest consumer of Champagne in the world. The United Kingdom remains the top consumer, weighing in at a whopping 39 million bottles, followed by the United States with more than 21 million (a drop of 6.21% with respect to 2006), and Germany with nearly 13 million. Data reported by the Comité Inerprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC) reveals that consumption of Champagne in Italy grew by 11% in 2007.

In 2007, Champagne exports nearly 151 million bottles to more than 190 countries, according to the Comité. Italy is followed by Belgium (with nearly 10 million bottles) and Japan (with just over 9 million bottles).
